Can we just say that before 2013 the recycling marketplace was a little like a Carnival cruise. It was open to everyone, filled with excitement, featuring numerous stops around the globe, and
showcasing beautiful outlets. People were enjoying themselves, and returns from recycling had transformed into profit centers and beneficial budget line items. This was the period before the era of the green fence.
Then after 2018 when the green sword dropped, and “travel”(recycling) became more domestic. I mean really domestic. Traveling beyond your home county attractions was difficult. Materials for recycle stopped moving because China shut its door and developing end markets domestically became the only way to survive. Many tour guides aka recyclers and processors were forced into taking different routes and left the industry altogether.
The years 2019-20 marked a period of exploration within the United States, focusing on growth and transformation. It involved discovering innovative methods to conquer mountains and navigate turbulent seas. Valuable insights emerged, particularly in the importance of maintaining clean, sorted, and separated materials, which paved the way for renewed opportunities in recycling.
Then in 2021 we were off to Paris (again) to become a part of the climate change agreement, and that excursion introduced us to a new language and new definitions. This novel dialect and broad descriptions would make our “travel” both interesting and confusing. Sustainability became not only about the environment but an encompassing term that included economics and social aspects.
As we continued our journey, recycling destinations through to 2024 included: Zero Waste to Landfill, ESG (Environmental, social, and governance), circular economy, sustainable materials management, carbon footprint, and advanced recycling to name a few.
While companies knew where they wanted to go and created pretty, glossy brochures about the destination (aka sustainability reports), very few had looked at the map, trained for the terrain or hired knowledgeable guides to help them reach their recycling goals successfully.
For us, 2025 symbolizes the Year of the Bridge. This bridge will facilitate your team's safe and successful journey toward your goals. Our aim is to connect the gap between ideas and action through consultation, team training, and support for all your recycling, and zero waste to landfill objectives.
